Weekly Note From the Pastor

We have received some comments about TCOC lately that we took as very high compliments. I like when I hear words like “authentic” when our church is described. Authentic is defined as: not false or copied; genuine; real. To me, being real is being what God intended, not what man desired. A recent church planter that visited our church was very impressed with our energy and passion after nine years. He said most churches fall into a ‘church as usual’ mode and idleness sets in. But he said it is Super Bowl Sunday every weekend at TheChurchOfCorinth! Marty Magehee told our audience at the concert last Saturday that our servanthood spirit had ministered to him greatly. He wrote some very complimentary things on his blog. I pray this characteristic never changes.

“Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it.” Romans 12:9 MSG

Marty Magehee

July 29, 2008

We had the privilege of having Marty Magehee of 4Him in concert with us this past Saturday evening.  I never know when inviting someone in that I don’t know personally of they will be all about themselves, or about ministry.  Many who become successful begin to think a little too highly of themselves and forget that they should be pointing people to the Cross of Christ rather than their own charisma.  I am happy to say that Marty was not only real and sincere, but his ministry coupled with his talent made for a tremendous concert.  I would highly recommend supporting his new project and if possible, book him at your church.  The experience with Marty was very refreshing!

It’s hot! I think we are now reaching temperatures where that expression is truly reality and not exaggeration! The old adage of frying an egg on the sidewalk is not too far off! Do you think it is getting hotter each year or are we getting spoiled to air conditioning? I remember going all day outside in the summer time, drinking water occasionally from the water hose, eating some fruit from the orchard and/or veggies from the garden and not going inside until we were called for supper. Maybe I just have a poor memory, or the sun baked my brain and evaporated my memory. Either way, I’m doing my best to stay cool during the middle of the day. I think a church swimming pool is warranted! Wow, the heat is getting to me! Thank goodness nothing ever shakes our Creator God!

“I will watch quietly from my dwelling place—as quietly as the heat rises on a summer day, or as the morning dew forms during the harvest.” Isaiah 18:4 NLT

Some people just don’t have a clue! The way that a person sees him/herself and what the rest of the world sees are two totally different things.  We view ourselves through rose-coloured glasses, while others have a clear view of reality. It brings to mind the passage: “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you” (Romans 12:3b NIV). We seem to see ourselves in a better light than the people around us. We allow the facts to get twisted in our favor and don’t judge ourselves as harshly as we judge others. Maybe we need to wear a cloak of humility in order to see ourselves in the mirror as we should.

I got hooked on Cashew Chicken when I was in college.

Springfield, MO had some unique Asian fast food eateries which specialized in a cashew chicken that picky college students would enjoy.  Now that my taste buds have refined, this dish is my absolute favorite at Sweet Basil.  All the food is good at this Thai restaurant, but their most popular menu item is Cashew Chicken.  I think it is their sauce (I guess I am a sauce man).  I usually get it with extra sauce.  Try it and tell me what you think.

I love those simple messages that let you know God does care and that you are making a difference in this world. They come from random places and are often disguised as normal life events. They are camouflaged well, and can only be recognized if looking for them. Otherwise, they are overlooked and the value missed. The sources aren’t necessarily pure, only the message. They are often misunderstood or over analyzed which devalues the purpose and diverts the plan. And usually, no one sees the value and significance in the manifestations but me. I often ask God for a sign about a certain situation or circumstance, and He always reciprocates with an answer, but I catch it because I am watching for it. I received a couple of great lessons and encouragements this past week. He will and is speaking to you as well. You must look for it and accept.

“In the morning You hear my voice, O Lord; in the morning I prepare [a prayer, a sacrifice] for You and watch and wait [for You to speak to my heart].” Psalm 5:3 AMP
