Gone Fishin’

October 24, 2008

I have had a lot of feedback about the message this past weekend. I believe it was a timely message from the Lord. I have been praying over every business card that was given me in the services. If you would like for me to pray over your job/business, please bring a business card or a piece of paper with your information and I will faithfully intercede for you.

Thanks

Sherri and I want to extend our deepest gratitude for all the gifts and cards we received for Pastor Appreciation, not to mention the countless others that gave in the offering for us.  We are humbled and sincerely touched every time.  We love you very much!

Reminisce: Check It At the Door

October 7, 2008

I was looking at some old articles that I have written through the years and thought it might be neat to resurrect them again.  Especially since this is Anniversary week.  This particular article goes well with something I have been promoting lately — bring your Bible to church.  Hope you enjoy…

I was trained as a child to take my Bible to church.  I teach my children the same value.  First of all, it is a good habit.  Secondly, a person should bring the textbook for the subject being taught, and the Scriptures are what we preach and teach at church.  Lastly, and most important to a youngster, each one receives a “kid’s buck” to spend at Miss Allison’s store if accompanied with their Bible.

But, with this in mind, I disagree with the notion that a person is somehow less than a Christian if he/she doesn’t always follow this practice.  I have heard it said many times growing up from zealous believers that a person shouldn’t come to church without his/her “sword.”  This reference can be misleading and can lead to a misunderstanding of its purpose.  A sword is an offensive weapon used in battle.  Hopefully, church is the one place where our guards can come down.  We must make ourselves vulnerable to God in order to hear what He is speaking.  We come to be challenged, not to be combative; to fellowship, not to fight; to worship, not to wage war.

Again, let me state for the record, I like to see parishioners opening their Bibles on Sunday morning, but I certainly don’t look down on those who don’t.  I always provide almost every passage of Scripture in the handout and/or on Power Point.  If good notes are taken, it can be studied further during personal devotion.  Where God’s army really needs to take their “sword” is into the battlefield.  It would be much more advantageous in a military sense to carry it to work, in your car, to the grocery store, etc, where we are confronted by the cares of the world and the lures of sin.  It is at the point of contact with unbelievers and earthly temptations that the “sword of the Spirit” becomes viable ammunition, and where bravery and courage come into play.  I have seen its abuse enough in God’s house, using righteous indignation to “whip” people into lining up with another’s mindset, legalistic views, or personal convictions.  It is time we use it properly.

So if you’re bringing your Bible to church as a learning tool, bring it on.  But if you are bringing it as a deadly weapon, you can check it at the door.

Weekly Note From the Pastor

October 7, 2008

We kicked off our new Capital Fundraising Campaign a week ago Sunday!  We are so excited to see the unity and desire of God’s people to pursue all that He has.  I trust everyone that attends TCOC will get involved in the process.  There are some incredible times ahead.  Anytime we get to a place that takes a step of faith we can be assured that we will see the Hand of God at work.

“I was right on the cliff-edge, ready to fall,
when God grabbed and held me.
God’s my strength, he’s also my song,
      and now he’s my salvation.
Hear the shouts, hear the triumph songs
in the camp of the saved?
”The hand of God has turned the tide!
The hand of God is raised in victory!
The hand of God has turned the tide!” psalm 118:13-16 MSG
