A Note From the Pastor

Pastor Jeff Williams // February 3rd, 2009

Crisis is defined as: a dramatic emotional or circumstantial upheaval in a person’s life.  It seems this term is being used more and more all the time to describe life, marriage, financial matters, etc.  People are facing issues that are rattling their entire existence and shaking the very foundation of their lives.  Sometimes I have to question sometimes how strong their foundation was to begin with, and if Jesus is truly their Cornerstone.  But in either case, crisis may be the very thing that stirs a person to turn in the right direction.  The change that must take place sometimes needs crisis to ‘force the issue.’  I like another definition for crisis: a condition of instability or danger leading to a decisive change.  It is often an indecisive walk that creates instability; an incubator for crisis.

“If you fall to pieces in a crisis, there wasn’t much to you in the first place.” Proverbs 24:10 MSG

One Response to “A Note From the Pastor”

In today’s sermon, 2-8-09, you described Paul and Silas? singing through the night and it influenced the jailer to become born again. Crisis, I believe, also contributed to his decision. Sometimes, the sudden revelation of utter lack of control over one’s own universe gives way to the thought, “Hey, what have I got to loose?” And Christ is always standing right next to that queston mark with the response, “Nothing.” And ads, “But everything to gain.”

From my own experience I think that people do not turn to Christ because they really believe they are in control, as I did. But then came that day when I knew beyond any doubt that I was not in charge.

Crisis seems to be a major component in the conversion of the lost. I wonder if there’s a way to convince people that they are not in charge before the crisis, while there is, in fact, still something left to lose in their lives.

    ……………………………………….

You are not like most preachers. In your “Crisis” comment, you wonder if Christ is the cornerstone of those in crisis. This stick-it-in-your-gut-gently form of chastisement is not risked by many of your peers. But we love you in spite of the scolding because, if we don’t know it’s the truth, we, at least, suspect that it is. We weep what we sow.

    ………………………………………..

There’s something else I’ve been wondering:

The people who sit in Catholic pews are called parishoners.

The people who sit in TCOC pews are called ……………………..

I’m looking for a word that includes members as well as non-members.

Got something to say?
